7. "Haunted" Gallery

plan

The "Haunted" Gallery connected the Queen's Chambers with the Chapel. As shown on the diagram above, the gallery opens onto the King and Queen's Royal Pews or "Holiday Closets," which were balconies overlooking the Chapel Royal.

The "Haunted" Gallery receives its name from the supposed haunting of Queen Katheryn Howard who, legends says, ran screaming down the hall towards the Chapel in hopes of pleading with Henry before her arrest. However, she was dragged away by guards before she could reach him.

Several famous pictures grace the hall, such as a small copy of the Tudor Dynasty Mural, a copy of the "White Hall Mural," a copy of "The Field of Cloth of Gold," as well as a painting of Henry VIII.

The Family of Henry VIII: This portrait, hanging to the right of the fireplace, was painted during Henry's last marriage to Catherine Parr, years after Jane Seymour's death, yet the painting still features her as Henry's consort. Princesses Mary and Elizabeth are included, having been reinstated in the line of succession.
